A transmission rarely fails without warning. Knowing the signs early can mean the difference between a $400 service and a $4,000 rebuild. Here's what to watch for.

Delayed or Harsh Shifts

The car hesitates before engaging gear, or shifts feel rough. Usually fluid degradation, solenoid failure, or clutch wear in DCTs.

Slipping Under Load

Engine RPMs climb but the car doesn't accelerate. Often clutch wear (manual / DCT) or band / clutch pack wear (automatic).

Shuddering on Acceleration

Vibration during gentle acceleration, especially at low speeds. Common in torque converter lockup or DCT clutch issues.
